What is graphic design? Simply put, graphic design is art that has a purpose. It executes a plan that works to achieve a specific objective with the aid of symbols, images, and even words. It is a form of communication on a visual level that works to express a variety of ideas and concepts through the use of both graphic tools and their elements.

Graphic design is a form of visual content created for communicating messages. Graphic design can be a most helpful tool for sharing your product or company brand and your message through the use of visuals that is both eye-catching and memorable.

Types of Graphic Design

There is no one method for communicating your message, so there are a variety of graphic design types (eight to be exact), each featuring their own specialization.

Visual Identity: usually presented in the form of a brand which creates a relationship between a user and a business or online identity.

Advertising and Marketing: when most individuals think of graphic design, advertising and marketing arebwhat pops to mind.

User Interface: a UI will consider all of those areas that a user will interact with, such as a screen, a keyboard, or a mouse, but in the arena of graphic design.

Publication: traditional a medium of print such as magazines, newspapers, and catalogs.

Packaging: almost everything we purchase comes in some form of packaging communicating the brand directly to the consumer.

Motion: this form of graphics are in motion, such as animation, audio, and video

Environmental: using visual means to connect an individual to a place making it more memorable, informative, or interesting and, as a result, more straightforward to navigate.

Illustration and Art: compositions that are created to help in solving or communicating a problem, such as t-shirts, comics, and video games.


Graphic Design Elements

Graphic design is the use of those designs that are image-based—such as logos, symbols, illustrations, and photos—or a combination of one or more of these elements. In specific, some of the elements commonly used in graphic design include:

1. Color

Undoubtedlty, one of the most essential and valuable elements of any form of visual design is color, or in some cases, the lack of it. When a designer has a solid grasp of the theory of color, they can work wonders on influencing both a brand and its design in a bold or subtle manner.

2. Lines

Whether they are wavy, straight, curved, thick, or thin, when using lines in graphic design, the possibilities avaiable are only as limited as your imagination. Lines are great for use in dividing a space or when separating the content in your layout. Lines can also help guide and direct the viewer’s eye to get them from one point to another.

3. Shapes

Shapes are useful creative tools for filling in spaces within the website content. They are also useful for supporting text content and aiding in balancing out the page’s overall design. Shapes are simplistic in their nature as they can literally be created out of nothing through the strategic use of white space within the design.

4. Texture

Through its visual presentation, texture can add a level of tactility to a surface simply through its appearance visually. Texture can add depth which can be significantly enhanced through the use of the proper materials.

5. Type

When used properly, a message can be dramatically transformed from mere works to a piece of artwork. Aligning fonts with such elements as color, size, and shape can significantly impact the point you are trying to communicate and get across to the viewer.

With the advent of technology came a realization for the opening of new doors to a creative vision. Ever-evolving innovative software like Adobe can aid the designer in creating illustrations and bringing their ideas to life. The software can also help in enhancing photos, creating text styles, and coordinating all the pieces needed for stunning layouts.
